The Blue Cross Blue Shield North Dakota (BCBSND) Caring Foundation is helping to make a difference in the fight to end hunger with a generous $25,000 donation to the Great Plains Food Bank that will immediately help feed hungry children, seniors and families across North Dakota and western Minnesota.
The donation comes at a critical time for many facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic where the Great Plains Food Bank has seen as high as a 79 percent increase in the need for food assistance across the state.
“We are proud to be partners with Great Plains Food Bank,” stated Dan Conrad, CEO and Chairman of BCBSND Caring Foundation. “Ending hunger is a shared responsibility, so joining in this effort through our financial donation and employee volunteers to ensure that our neighbors and communities have access to food is so much more than the right thing to do, it’s essential as we join together to support good health and well-being in communities across the state.”
BCBSND representatives have also spent time in the midst of the pandemic giving back by volunteering inside the Great Plains Food Bank warehouse.
“When COVID-19 hit North Dakota, BCBSND Caring Foundation immediately reached out, asking what they could do to help. This incredibly generous gift allows us to ensure no family goes hungry during the pandemic,” Great Plains Food Bank President Melissa Sobolik said. “We can’t thank them enough for their early support and unwavering dedication to help end hunger.”
The donation is a critical piece of the Great Plains Food Bank’s estimated near $12 million response over the next 10 months to meet the increase in demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That response includes an additional $2 million needed in fundraising and 7.3 million pounds of food, which equates to 6 million meals.
