(Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, ND) — Former Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Jesse “Jay” Taken Alive has died from COVID-19. Jesse is being remembered as a champion of the Lakota culture, a basketball lover, and a leader who advocated for his tribe and Indigenous people. He taught Lakota culture and language at the school in McLaughlin, South Dakota. Jesse spent 24 years in tribal government and served as chairman from 1993 to 1997.
