Transgender Athletic Competition Up For Discussion At Session

(Bismarck, ND) — North Dakota lawmakers are considering a bill that would bar transgender students from competing in sports in their identifying gender. The legislation introduced yesterday by Representative Ben Koppelman would prevent federally funded institutions from allowing transgender athletes to play sports exclusively for one sex that is in opposition to their gender identity. The bill would also prevent state-owned athletic facilities from hosting competitions where an athlete competes against anyone outside the gender they were assigned at birth. Koppelman says the bill would keep fairness in sports and prevent women from facing the disadvantage of having to compete against men. LGBTQ advocates strongly oppose the measure.
