Two People Unhurt After Kayak Overturns In Red River

Fargo Fire

Fargo, ND (Mar. 27, 2021) – Two people were soaked and cold but otherwise unhurt after the kayak they were in overturned in the Red River in Fargo Saturday afternoon. Fargo firefighters, police officers, and FM Ambulance responded to a report of an overturned two-person kayak in the Red River near Dike East in downtown Fargo. The kayak had capsized near the rapids. A caller reported that there were two people in the water and neither had been able to get to shore.

By the time responders arrived only a few minutes after being dispatched, a male occupant had made it to the Fargo shore about 300 yards north of where the kayak capsized. The female was still stuck in waist deep water only a few yards from shore near the boat landing on the Fargo side. The combination of the swift current and poor footing made it impossible for her to get to shore alone. Firefighters pulled her to shore. Firefighters and FM Ambulance personnel began warming both patients because of the cold water temperatures. Both patients refused further treatment and transport. They returned home in their own vehicle.
