(Pierre, SD) — A new program will make federal funding available to nearly 100 businesses in South Dakota. Governor Kristi Noem and the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources announced the Meat Processing Grant Program Friday that will distribute eight-million-dollars to facilities across the state. New facilities will receive 16 of the grants with the goal of breaking up the industry’s monopoly run by companies like Tyson and Smithfield Foods. Noem says the state will also join the Multi-State Cooperative Interstate Shipment Program, making it possible for local processing plants to sell meat and poultry outside the state.
