Community Marches to Honor, Pray For Boarding School Children

(Rapid City, SD) — The community of Rapid City is remembering the lives lost at a local Indian Boarding School from the late 18-hundreds. Many in the community took the opportunity of Native American Day yesterday to walk and pray for the children who died at the boarding school that was closed in 1933. The walk kicked off at Sioux Park and traveled to the Canyon Lake Methodist Church, where a memorial to the victims of the boarding school is set to be built. Workers at the boarding schools located in several parts of North America took Native American children to try to “assimilate” them.
