State Lawmakers Reach Impasse over Redistricting Plan

(Pierre, SD) — State lawmakers head into the second day of their special session today at an impasse over how to proceed with redistricting. Members of both chambers have criticized the map the other chamber passed and the debate continued yesterday, with both sides claiming the other chamber’s map constitutes gerrymandering. State Senator Lee Schoenbeck says the state Supreme Court will have to decide what the map looks like if the legislature cannot agree. Today, a conference committee comprised of members from both parties will meet to try to hammer out a compromise.
