Lakota Advocate Marcella LeBeau Dies At 102

(Eagle Butte, SD) — A Lakota advocate for removing military honors received by participants at the Wounded Knee Massacre is dead. Marcella LeBeau has received international attention for her call on Congress to strip members of the Seventh Cavalry of medals received in connection with the 1890 massacre. LeBeau also received attention for her heroism as a nurse at the Battle of the Bulge, which earned her a French Legion of Honor medal. She spent 30 years in Eagle Butte, South Dakota working for Indian Health Services as a nurse and in government and public health positions.
