(Sioux Falls, SD) — A former South Dakota Penitentiary director is suing the state. Stefany Bawek alleges that the Department of Corrections discriminated and violated her civil rights because she’s a woman and because she made a sexual harassment report. Bawek was fired from the state penitentiary last summer after running Pheasantland Industries since 2018. She was one of a group of DOC officials during and investigation by Governor Kristi Noem’s office regarding a tip about problems in the prison system.
