(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota will soon allow only taxpayers to pay for elections. Governor Kristi Noem signed a restriction into law yesterday that won’t allow state and local governments to accept outside funds, grants, or gifts to run their elections unless they come from the local, state, or federal government. Exceptions are allowed for things of “nominal or intrinsic value.” The restriction is a response to funds provided by Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife that brought more than 350-thousand dollars into nearly 40 South Dakota counties to pay for their election expenses. The law takes effect July 1st.
