Former Highway Superintendent Gets 100 Days For Embezzlement

(Sioux Falls, SD) — A former highway superintendent for Minnehaha County is facing 100 days in jail for embezzlement. D.J. Buthe was sentenced yesterday for stealing thousands from the South Dakota Association of County Highway Superintendents. Buthe had been the organization’s secretary-treasurer. He told the judge at his sentencing that he had a “lapse in judgement” when he used a credit card from the association to buy items such as food, gifts, and travel for himself and his family. In total, Buthe stole more than 80-thousand dollars from the association and another 20-thousand from Minnehaha County, but has repaid more than 127-thousand in restitution.
