South Dakota Officials Euthanize 85-Thousand Birds As Avian Flu Breaks Out

(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota officials are fighting the state’s first avian flu outbreak since 2015. Officials euthanized 85-thousand birds recently after the virus was found in turkeys at two concentrated animal feeding operations in Charles Mix County. Other kinds of poultry that came in close contact with the turkeys were part of the group that was euthanized. Two other sites are being investigated. Assistant state veterinarian Doctor Mendel Miller says he thinks the state’s response is effective so far.
