(Rapid City, SD) — Five books are being considered for destruction by the Rapid City Area School District. School board president Kate Thomas says administrators and the director of teaching have designated the 350 copies of the books as “to be destroyed” along with other property owned by the district. The board will consider whether the books will be considered a surplus at their meeting today. The board’s agenda says the district regularly gets rid of items it considers unnecessary or not suitable. Among the books in question is Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Girl, Woman, Other, which each have homosexual characters. Also under consideration are How Beautiful We Were, which focuses on the environmental decline because of an oil company, and The Circle, which revolves around a corporation that pressures citizens to wear body cameras.
