South Dakota Trigger Law Would Ban Abortion If Roe v. Wade Overturned

(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota is one of a number of states that has trigger laws in place that could automatically outlaw abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Politico reported Monday that the high court would be overturning the landmark decision in an upcoming ruling. The reports was based on a draft of a decision that was leaked. Abortion is currently legal up to 22 weeks of pregnancy and Governor Kristi Noem says she will move to further tighten abortion laws with a special legislative session if the landmark ruling is struck down. South Dakota’s trigger law includes an exception to preserve the life of the mother.
