League Of Women Voters Lawsuit Claims Ballot Initiative Law Wrong

(Pierre, SD) — A lawsuit filed by the League of Women Voters of South Dakota is claiming that a law adjusting the ballot initiative process violates First Amendment rights and the state’s constitution. The organization filed the suit last week, challenging the 2020 law requiring paid and unpaid circulators of ballot initiative and constitutional amendment petitions to have lived in South Dakota For at least 30 days. The group ran into trouble with the law when they reached out to branches in neighboring states and the national organization for help when circulating a petition to create an independent redistricting commission. The South Dakota branch has fewer than 140 members.
