(Pierre, SD) — A group of Native Americans is working to recover items stolen from the bodies of victims of the Wounded Knee massacre. Heart At Wounded Knew 1890, or HAWK 1890, included Native Americans whose relatives either died at or survived the massacre. The group has initiated an effort to get items in a Barre, Massachusetts returned to the Oglala Lakota and Cheyenne River Sioux. Negotiations between the group and the Barre Museum Association have stalled, despite and initial agreement being reached. Museum officials say a process must be followed to be sure the objects are returned properly.
