(Stutsman Co, ND) — A North Dakota man is accused of killing a teen with his SUV because he thought the boy was a “Republican Extremist.” Police say Shannon Brandt admitted to fatally striking a teenage pedestrian with his car after they had “a political argument.” Brandt was charged this week with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly accident following a street dance in McHenry.
Brandt is accused of running down Cayler Ellingson with his car in the early hours of Sunday morning. Brandt made the 9-1-1 call and told dispatch that he hit Ellingson after having a political argument and claimed the 18-year-old victim was a member of a Republican extremist group.
Ellingson’s mother told investigators that the teen called her shortly before the incident to ask if the family knew Brandt. Soon after that, the teen called his mother to say he was being chased according to court documents. The mother couldn’t reach her son after that.
Brandt was released on bail on Tuesday. Police say Brandt admitted he had been drinking before the incident.
