Lawsuit By Tribes Against State Gets Trial Date

(Bismarck, ND) — A lawsuit brought by two Native American tribes alleging a violation of the Voting Rights Act is now scheduled for trial. In the lawsuit the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and the Spirit Lake Tribe take aim at the new legislative map drawn in the state saying it violates the Voting Act. Earlier this summer a judge dismissed the state’s claim that the tribes lacked the standing to sue. The bench trial, which is heard by a judge only, is scheduled to begin June 12th, 2023.
