NDSU Men’s Golf, Cronkhite Fire Tournament Best Rounds to Lead NDSU on Final Day at TPC Colorado

BERTHOUD, Colo. – The North Dakota State men’s golf team and Gavin Cronkhite both shot tournament best rounds on Wednesday to help the Bison climb the leaderboard on the final day, as the team finished third overall.

NDSU fired the best round of the tournament by any team and the second-best round of the season and program history for the Bison as the team carded a -15 round of 273. It was the best round of the tournament by four shots and one off of the season and program best of 272 (-16) in the NDSU Fall Invitational.

The Bison moved from fifth to third, finishing the tournament at -6, only behind winners #16 Colorado State (-12) and runner up No. 39 Brigham Young (-8). NDSU finished 16 shots ahead of fourth place Boise State and 44 shots ahead of defending Summit League champions and host Denver (+38).

Cronkhite fired a career best round of 66 in the third and final round to lead the Bison charge as he soared up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for third overall with fellow Bison Ian Simonich at -5 for the three-day event. Cronkhite had nine birdies on the day, including four in a row between holes 13 and 16 to match the tournament best round for an individual.

Simonich matched his second-round 68 again in the final round as he too moved up the leaderboard and joined Cronkhite in the third position. Simonich had a bogey-free round and finished with four birdies. The result was Cronkhite’s fourth career top-5 finish and the third for Simonich.

Nate Adams and Brock Winter also fired under-par rounds for the Bison on the day to cap the scoring for NDSU. Adams shot a 69 to move up 21 places and finish in a tie for 16th at +4 in the 74-golfer field. Winter climbed 19 places with a 70, as he finished in a tie for 24th at +6.

Nate Deziel shot a +1 round of 73 on the final day and finished in a tie for 36th at +9, as all five Bison finished in the top half of the tournament field.

NDSU golfers combined for four of the 13 total rounds under par in the final round. The Bison have finished in the top three in four consecutive events this season and have not placed outside the top five all semester.

North Dakota State will wrap up the fall semester next week with a trip to the ODU/Kilmarlic Tournament hosted at the Kilmarlic G.C. in Powells Point, North Carolina. The tournament will be a three round event over three days, beginning Sunday, October 23.
