(Bismarck, ND) — The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department is celebrating 150 years in operation this year. With that, the department is honoring its rich history, dating back to a time even before Bismarck. In 1873, the newly formed city of Edwinton was home to 147 buildings, two of them, a jail and an office, that made up the sheriff’s department. Officers on horseback evolved with the dawn of the automobile, but Major Jim Hulm says even up until the 1970s, some police bought their own squad cars.
