(Rapid City, SD) — A deadly officer-involved shooting in Rapid City this past November is considered justified. State Attorney General Marty Jackley says a Division of Criminal Investigation review found lethal force was necessary in this case. James Mathew Murphy was shot and killed after charging at an officer with a knife and attempting to stab the officer. That’s when the officer fired a duty-issued firearm, hitting and killing Murphy. The attorney general says the officer attempted to deescalate the situation, but the suspect still charged at the officer.
