(Pierre, SD) — Flags at South Dakota government buildings are being flown at half-staff in honor of late former U.S. Senator James Abourezk. Abourezk died Friday. He had served in the U.S. Senate representing South Dakota from 1973 to 1979, after serving in the U.S. House from 1971-1973. He was the first Arab-American senator in the country’s history and served as the first chair of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. Flags will remain lowered through sunset this Friday.
