(Pierre, SD) — A South Dakota property rights group wants to initiate a referendum on Senate Bill 201. The bill allows the state’s Public Utilities Commission to override county setbacks on carbon pipelines, which was a heated topic during the legislative session. It also pays counties and landowners for each foot of pipeline. Opponents of the bill say they’re not against pipelines, but rather, they support local control. The group needs to collect more than 17-thousand signatures submitted by June 25th to get the referendum on the ballot. A referendum would allow South Dakotans to vote on whether or not to keep the bill in place.
