(Helena, MT) — The group working to put an abortion initiative on Montana’s ballot this year is accusing the Secretary of State’s office of throwing out signatures. Montanans Securing Reproductive Rights said yesterday the office was tossing the signatures of inactive, but registered voters and changed the process for counting the signatures without notice. The group believes this action will lead to thousands of signatures being rejected after submitting nearly double the amount required to get the initiative on the ballot. The Secretary of State’s Office said it is following state law by disregarding those inactive voter signatures.
