(Pierre, SD) — Game commissioners aren’t ready for a cap on out of state turkey hunters, at least not yet. South Dakota’s Game, Fish and Parks Commission yesterday rejected the idea of limiting how many turkey hunting licenses out of state hunters can buy. Last year, non-South Dakota hunters bought slightly more turkey licenses than in-state hunters, and some advocates say that’s unfair. State Wildlife Division director Tom Kirschenmann said the plan to limit out of state hunters to just 22 percent of the state’s nearly five thousand licenses is ‘too drastic of a step.’ Game commissioners say they’re not against some kind of limit for out of state hunters, but no one is saying just where that limit should be.
