(Springfield, SD) — Families are sharing their concerns for inmates in the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield. This comes after fights broke out there last week. The big incident happening last Tuesday resulted in injuries to six inmates and some minor injuries to staff who de-escalated the situation. One mother of an inmate there says lack of staff and training are reasons behind inmates feeling unsafe. Some inmates described last week’s fights as “gang-on-gang violence.” Families say they are counting the days until South Dakota’s new prison facility is finished to provide some relief.
