Tuesday Vote On Harrisburg Sewer System And Proposed Prison

(Harrisburg, SD) — The Harrisburg City Council is scheduled to vote on Tuesday on a request for a proposed state prison to be linked with the city’s sewer system. The request comes through the South Dakota Department of Corrections and provides compensation to the city. According to the resolution on Tuesday’s meeting agenda, the proceeds would be used to “pay off certain bonds.” The meeting is open for Harrisburg residents to voice their opinion on the matter. A group calling itself NOPE, which stands for Neighbors Opposing Prison Expansion, posted Harrisburg Aldermen’s contact information on Facebook for residents who want them to vote No on the resolution. The proposed state penitentiary would be located in Lincoln County, outside of the corporate city limits.
