SD Firefighters To Help Fight CA Wildfires

(Los Angeles, CA) — South Dakota firefighter crews are headed to California to help fight the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area. At least 16 firefighters and five engines from three South Dakota fire departments, along with South Dakota Wildland Fire, will all be in California this week. Crews will be working 16 hour days for two weeks in difficult conditions. The National Weather Service is warning of high winds in the Los Angeles area over the next couple of days. Wind gusts could range from 40 to 70 miles per hour and coupled with low humidity, could further fuel the blazes that have left thousands of homes destroyed and at least 24 people dead. Rob Powell with South Dakota Wildland Fire says fighting these fires are particularly dangerous because of numerous hazards, like power lines, houses going up, propane tanks, and the evacuation of people clogging up roads.
