ND Historical Society Gets Awarded For Whitestone Hill Update

(Kulm, ND) — The North Dakota Historical Society is getting a national award for updating its monument at Whitestone Hill. The monument is about 20 miles south of Kulm, and was erected at the spot where a battle took place in 1863 between U.S. cavalry troops and a Dakota village that resulted in the deaths of 20 soldiers and at least 150 Dakota adults and children. A monument to the soldiers was erected on the site in 1909. Another monument was added later to honor the Dakota victims. In 2023, new interpretive panels were added to the site. Those panels have now won an award by the National Association of Interpretation.
