Bill May Bring Baby Box Save Havens To SD

(Sioux Falls, SD) — A new bill could make it easier for South Dakota parents to surrender their newborns. House Bill 10-44, named the ‘Baby Gabriel Bill’ in honor of the baby found in Sioux Falls last summer, would amend the state’s current safe haven laws. It would allow parents to surrender babies in a climate-controlled baby box instead of face-to-face. Republican Representative Bethany Soye is the bill’s prime sponsor and says local hospitals and organizations like Right to Life have indicated they would fund boxes. The next hearing for the bill has yet to be scheduled.
