(Belcourt, ND) — Native Americans are celebrating the release of Leonard Peltier. The indigenous activist was serving life in prison for the deaths of two FBI agents during the 1975 standoff on the Pine Ridge Reservation. His supporters have long maintained his innocence, and before leaving office, former President Biden commuted his sentence. On Tuesday, the 80-year-old Peltier returned home to the Turtle Mountain Reservation. His supporters and family members stood outside in subzero temperatures along Highway 281 in Belcourt to greet him, holding up “welcome home” signs and celebrating with songs and drum circles.
