A property tax relief plan has narrowly survived in the South Dakota legislature.
Senate Bill 216, which caps property value increases at 3 percent annually from 2027 to 2031, passed the House 53-16 Monday after first failing.
The bill also expands the property tax freeze program by raising income thresholds to $55,000 for individuals and $65,000 for families.
Rep. Leslie Heinemann called it “a shot over the bow” to local governments to reduce spending, while Rep. Liz May criticized it as insufficient.
The amended bill now returns to the Senate with just three days left in the regular session.
