Geese have washed ashore at Lake Byron.

“Thousands of dead geese have washed ashore at Lake Byron, just north of Huron, creating a devastating scene for residents. The geese are believed to have succumbed to bird flu, which spread rapidly due to the area’s mild winter.

Local residents, like Denis Drake and Patrick Breck, say they’ve been dealing with this issue for the past three years, but this season is by far the worst. Roughly 20,000 geese have already been removed by volunteers working together to clean up the lake.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks department is helping by burying the dead birds on nearby land. Residents say despite the challenge, their tight-knit community is coming together to restore Lake Byron to its natural beauty.”
