(Pierre, SD) — A federal judge is denying the latest plea from the only person on South Dakota’s death row. Briley Piper received the death penalty for the torture and killing of Chester Poage in 2000 near Spearfish. The U.S. District judge rejected Piper’s claims that his counsel had not been effective in representing him. The judge also denied Piper’s demand to overturn his sentence. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley responded to the decision, saying “Briley Piper has refused to take responsibility or show any remorse for the heinous murder of Chester Poage 25 years ago.”
