(CHICAGO, IL) – Farmers Business Network (FBN®), the global AgTech platform and farmer-to-farmer network, today announced the release of its 2025 Planting Intentions Report for major US crops, which provides intelligence to help maximize acreage mix and marketing strategies.
The report found:
-
Corn is expected to be at 95.5 million acres for 2025.
-
This is a 1.5 million acre increase from the 2025 Ag Forum estimates (94 million acres) and 3.5 million acres above the USDA’s November baseline acres.
-
This would be a 5.4% or nearly 5 million acre increase compared to 2024 corn acres.
-
The biggest increases in corn acreage estimates are in Iowa and Kansas.
-
-
Soybeans are expected to be at 83.5 million acres for 2025.
-
This is 500,000 acres below the 2025 Ag Forum estimates (84 million acres).
-
This is a decrease of about 3.6 million acres or 4.1% compared to 2024.
-
Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana saw the biggest reductions in soybean acres.
-
-
Winter wheat acres are expected to increase to about 710,000 acres or 2.1% compared to 2024.
-
The report also analyzed non-durum spring wheat (expected to decrease 2.1% or 200,000 acres compared to 2024), sorghum (a 7.9% expected drop or 500,000 acres), and cotton (unchanged / stable).
-
The FBN estimates were derived from a March survey of nearly 1,000 US farmers representing 2 million acres of total production.
“We were expecting a move toward corn, but this was more dramatic than we anticipated,” said Cody Bills, Director, US Market Advisory & Brokerage. “In addition, the dry winter and near optimal conditions in the U.S. for fast planting could lead to even more corn acres.”
This is the fifth year of the FBN Planting Report, which was within 3% of the USDA report over the past four years. From 2021 to 2024, FBN’s corn acreage forecasts averaged just 1.2 million acres off USDA March Prospective Plantings estimates —over 35% more accurate than the analyst average of 1.85 million. When compared to the USDA’s Final Acreage Report, FBN’s March corn forecast is 25% more accurate and soybean forecast 67% more accurate than analyst averages.
“With the tremendous uncertainty in the farm economy today, we’re proud to provide insights like these back to our farmer members who are trying to manage risk in a difficult pricing environment,” said Bills.
The estimates were created by FBN’s Crop Marketing Advisory analysts, and were available early to survey respondents and FBN Crop Marketing subscribers. FBN analysts will be hosting a webinar on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 11 am CT; register for free at FBN.com/Webinar. The full report is available at FBN.com/Planting.

Methodology: An electronic survey was open to all U.S. FBN members for participation between February 11 and March 18, 2025. The survey collected the respondent’s postal code, 2024 planted acres, and intended acres for 2025 for key U.S. crops. Any responses that were incomplete or inconsistent were removed from the analysis. The confidence level provided is based on the number and geographic distribution of responses per crop.
