PIERRE, S.D. (SDBA) — The South Dakota Legislature will convene its veto session at 1 p.m. Monday, March 31. The House and Senate are considering a potential override of Governor Larry Rhoden’s second veto this session on Legislative Day 38 of 38.
HB 1169, a bill modifying signature requirements for constitutional amendment petitions, is the only measure up for an override attempt. It would require initiators to obtain signatures in each of the state’s 35 legislative districts.
Before the regular session ended on Day 37 earlier this month, the House could not overturn Rhoden’s veto of HB1132, which would have expanded childcare tuition assistance for childcare workers.
Following the veto session, attention will turn to future legislative priorities. At 3 p.m., the Legislature’s Executive Board will review summer study proposals. Topics include the state brand board, cryptocurrency, state sales tax exemptions, weather anomalies, and expanding in-state meat production. The E-Board will only approve, at most, three of the 30 proposed topics.
The session marks the conclusion of the 100th legislative term, with Rhoden signing more than 200 bills into law.
