(Madison, SD) — Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is set to be the commencement speaker at Dakota State University for its spring graduation next month. The ceremony is now just over two weeks away. Dakota State’s announcement is drawing mixed reaction from students. DSU officials say Noem was selected because of her support for DSU and its students while noting they asked her when she was still the South Dakota Governor. Some students have already spoken out, saying they respect her support but don’t agree with her politics with recent actions against immigrants. Noem is also supposed to receive an honorary doctorate degree, which the school’s student senate has voted against. The student senate says it’s scheduling a protest on the day of graduation.
