Governor Larry Rhoden says he’s still undecided

South Dakota’s race for governor is starting to take shape — but Governor Larry Rhoden says he’s still undecided about his future plans.

Rhoden says he’ll likely announce whether he’s running after his “Open for Opportunity” tour wraps up. He adds that other candidates entering the race won’t impact his decision — saying, quote, “I’m not making a decision based on who I’m running against, I’m making a decision based on what I’m running for.”

Meanwhile, Republican House Speaker Jon Hansen has officially launched his campaign for governor, with Speaker Pro-Tem Karla Lems joining him as his running mate.

On the Democratic side, State Representative Nicole Uhre-Balk says she’s hoping for a candidate who can reach voters across party lines.

South Dakota voters will head to the polls for the gubernatorial race on November 3rd, 2026.
