One Educational Savings Accounts Bill Deferred

(Pierre, SD) — The discussion continues in Pierre over the creation of educational savings accounts for some South Dakota students. House Bill 10-09, one of two bills concerning the topic, was deferred after a hearing yesterday to January 29th. The move was made for lawmakers to formulate the best possible version of the bill, as well as the ability to provide a fiscal note so the committee knows how much it would cost to implement educational savings accounts. Representative Dylan Jordan, the prime sponsor of the bill, says the goal is to fund the education of each student, regardless of school choice. Education groups have pushed back against the proposal with worries over diverting funds from public education in an already tight budget year so that these accounts can be made.
