1978 Indian Child Welfare Act Codified In North Dakota

(Bismarck, ND) — A new bill signed into law protects tribal adoptions in North Dakota. Governor Doug Burgum codified the federal Indian Child Welfare Act with this week’s signing. The ICWA dates back to the late 70s. It was initially created as a response to the high rate at which Native American and Alaska Native children were taken from their homes.
