Access To Sandbars Restricted To Protect Threatened Bird

(Bismarck, ND) — Access to two sandbars on the Missouri River near Bismarck has been closed to protect the nests of a threatened bird species. Nests belonging to the Ploving Piper bird were found after the sandbars were examined by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crew. The crew has found fifty-seven nests in the state so far this year, seven of which have reportedly been destroyed. The sandbars will reopen once the birds are old enough to fly.
