Burgum Vetoes Bill To Ban Approval, Ranked Choice Voting In Local Races

(Bismarck, ND) — Governor Doug Burgum is issuing his third veto of the legislative session. Burgum vetoed a bill yesterday that would have prohibited political subdivisions in the state instituting approval voting and ranked choice voting for local races. Burgum says the ban infringes on local control and home rule in the state’s cities. Fargo was the first city in the nations to institute approval voting in the nation in 2020. The bill passed both chambers with veto-proof majorities.
