The train cars involved in last month’s fiery train derailment near Carrington were a model deemed flawed by the National Transportation Safety Board. The cars in question are called DOT-111 tank cars, and the NTSB says they’re prone to rupturing. Because of the risk, Congress mandated that they be replaced for hauling flammable liquids by 2029, but some are still in use. The derailment caused three-point-six-million dollars in damage, and investigators are still working to determine what caused it.
