First Native American Elected To State Legislature Leadership

(Bismarck, ND) — For the first time, a Native American will hold a leadership position in the North Dakota Legislature. Representative Jayme Davis of Rolette starts today as chair of the Democratic-Nonpartisan League caucus. Davis is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band Chippewa Indians, and replaces Fargo Rep. Gretchen Dobervich, who had led the caucus since 2018. As a House member last year, Davis led the passage of a law that codified the federal Indian Child Welfare act into North Dakota state law.
