Kayakers Who Drowned Identified As Grandfather, Grandson

(Fort Ransom, ND) — Authorities say the kayakers who drowned in the Sheyenne River at Fort Ransom last weekend were a grandfather and his grandson. They’ve been identified as 69-year-old Anton Schaffner and 12-year-old Sterling Schaffner. Family members say the two entered the river north of Fort Ransom and were expected to meet up with the rest of the family at a landing, but never appeared. Their kayaks were found under the Fort Ransom Dam, and their bodies were recovered last Sunday and Monday.
