Luminous Plane Seen Over Bismarck Wasn’t On Fire

(Bismarck, ND) — A plane seen glowing and leaving a streak in the sky over Bismarck wasn’t on fire. On Sunday night, weather cam viewers noticed a plane over Bismarck that appeared to be on fire and leaving a trail of smoke. However, aviation experts say the plane wasn’t burning, and the unusual sight was due to an optical illusion. Bismarck Airport Director Greg Haug says the glow came from the plane’s navigation lights, and what appeared to be smoke was actually wingtip vortices, which are swirling columns of air behind airplane wings that can become visible in hazy conditions. No airplane fires were reported in the area.
