Man Killed On Turtle Mountain Reservation In Officer-Involved Shooting

(Belcourt, ND) — A man believed to be trying to incite a chase with Bureau of Indian Affairs officers on the Turtle Mountain reservation is dead following an officer-involved shooting. According to legal counsel for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and other tribe officials, the man was making U-turns on Highway Five west of Belcourt. Legal counsel said an officer asked the man to get out of the car, but did not know what led to the officer firing any shots or how many shots were fired. Earlier reports said there was an exchange of gunfire, but counsel said the suspect did not fire any shots. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the FBI are investigating. The tribal chairman is calling this an isolated incident and says there’s no threat to the public.
