(Bismarck, ND) — Parents in North Dakota have filed a lawsuit against a state law that bans gender-affirming care for children. The parents say the law that resulted from House Bill 1254 is a violation of their constitutional rights to bodily autonomy and parenting. However, supporters of the legislation claim that gender-affirming care can cause irreversible damage to children’s bodies, and feel they have an obligation to protect them. One 12-year-old who testified said state lawmakers are barring a generation of kids from living as they truly are. Currently, the plaintiffs are requesting an injunction while the case is tried, which would render the law ineffective.
