Sacred Site Returned To Tribal Nations

(Mandan, ND) — A sacred indigenous site in Mandan has been returned to its original caretakers. The site is a grassy slope called Crying Hill, and has had importance to the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara and Lakota tribes for centuries. Local resident Patrick Atkinson bought the property in 2003 with the intention of preserving the site, and eventually returning it to the indigenous people. That goal has finally been reached, as Crying Hill has been gifted back to the MHA Nation. Atkinson says he hopes passing travelers will look into the history of the site.
