Snowmelt Improves Drought Conditions, Planting Delayed

(Undated) — Drought conditions are noticeably improving in large portions of the state due to one of the biggest snowpacks in years. At the beginning of April, the US Drought Monitor map showed 95-percent of the state at some level of drought; that number’s down to 55-percent this week. The capital city saw its second-snowiest winter of all time, and the southeast parts of the state saw the most snow. Western North Dakota still remains in a state of moderate drought. By Sunday, farmers had planted just one-percent of the spring wheat crop, about five percentage points lower than the five-year average.
